✩Music Marketing Project

In this project, my three partners and I are tasked with creating a music video and a marketing campaign for a new band based on a chosen song and its genre. The song we are working with is “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked” by Cage the Elephant, which falls under the alternative rock genre. Other bands of this genre are Foo Fighters, Arctic Monkeys, and Franz Ferdinand.

My group decided that since the song lyrics tell a story, it would make sense to use this to our advantage and create a storytelling music video. Although, since we were unsure if we should be telling the same story as the lyrics and if we should be lip-syncing along with them, we instead opted to create promotional clips for the band to insert in the music video to avoid this issue altogether. My partner Brett and I, after talking with our other partners Aurea and Isabella, decided that we would take on the music video portion of the project while they would tackle the marketing.

Brett and I worked together to type out the outline for what we wanted the story part of the music video to look like. Below I’ve provided a screenshot of our story plan, but essentially, we plan on portraying a man slowly going crazy as he commits crime after crime. First, he steals a purse from a woman, then he celebrates the money he gained by throwing it into the air and having a glass of wine (see photo below for our idea of the shot of the man drinking wine). At the end of the film, he commits a large-scale crime such as breaking into someone's house (this could change, we are still deciding) and drives himself into madness. One of the final shots will be the main character's wicked smile.

Throughout the story, there will be shots of the band in a dark area (ie. garage, a rooftop at night) to match the atmosphere and lightning of the storytelling portion as well as the evil actions shown. We have been focusing primarily on the storytelling aspect of the music video, so the promotional parts are not as fleshed out. However, we plan on recruiting family members or nearby friends to act as the band since Brett and I will be in the storytelling section. Our next plan of action is to work on the storyboard for the music video using the ideas mentioned in the screenshot above so that we can start filming soon. The main challenge Brett and I will have going forward is getting people who are willing to act as our fictional band, finding a time to film, and collaborating with our other two partners to ensure the footage we create for the band matches what they have created.
