✩the CR!!

In my short film, how fast the evening passes, I aimed to capture the conflicting emotions a person can feel on the concept of change. This includes the understanding that change must occur for life to continue, and the uncontrollable feeling of loss that arises when knowing that the things you hold dear will never be the same again.

The concept of my film was created by my life currently; I’m about to go to college and everything I know will irrevocably change in just a few months. Grappling with this knowledge has been a challenge for me and made me reminiscent of my past and how I deal with change. Since my short film concept stemmed from a feeling, I began by researching experimental short films. This genre does not have a set guideline for what an experimental film must look like and gives ample creative freedom for me to use a feeling as the main focus of my product. Some films I researched include Forever, Suburbia, and Weltschmerz. Through my research, I saw how experimental films don’t follow a traditional storyline which helped drive my creative process. I also noted how the films never seemed to force one message on the viewer, but rather let the audience determine their own interpretation of the film’s message.

These films helped me build my sequence of events. The alternative narrative structure convention was one I decided to work closely with since it felt more natural to express an emotion through vague moments rather than a chronological sequence of actions. In choosing this narrative structure, I could delve into the varying stances on change through music and setting rather than plot and dialogue. I knew I wanted to capture the difference between the party with friends and the disordered, lonely party, which worked to convey the positive and negative emotions garnered from one experience. In suddenly cutting to between the two parties, it conforms to the experimental genre’s unique presentation of the storyline and depicts the simultaneous, contrasting feelings one can entertain.

Since my film was inspired by an emotion, I wasn’t creatively driven to include any scenes with dialogue. As such, I chose to highlight the setting, music, and emotions instead. This meant that for the scenes where I wanted the main character to be surrounded by friends, I knew my actors needed to be skilled performers and friends with each other so that their interactions would be realistic rather than scripted. As a result, the people who I could cast in my film were limited since my focus wasn’t on representation, but rather on the realistic dynamic of a close friend group. If I had more time to be selective about the people I had casted, I could have ensured a more diverse cast. However, my choice of all feminine presenting actors not only appealed to my target audience and added to the realism of the story through their natural relationships.

My primary goal was to depict my own understanding of change in a way that I would find visually interesting. Knowing this helped me to define my target audience. My target audience is defined as females, ages 14-26, who latch onto the past and/or have a fear of change. Because I am a part of my own target audience, I used this to my advantage when deciding on my branding and engagement plans. Since TikTok and Instagram are highly popular in my target demographic, I combined these two platforms to appeal to my target audience.

I also created a Spotify playlist and used only lowercase text with minimal punctuation to further appeal to my audience. Music was a large factor in solidifying the tone and message of my film, not to mention a major aspect of the lives of many teens to young adults. In sharing playlists with friends and crafting hyper-specific soundtracks for emotions or characters, communicating via music is an aspect of my target audience that I wanted to indulge in. As for the lowercase text, this not only established an informal, friendly connection with my target demographic, but mirrors the way people around my age talk to each other online. This way, the film didn’t appear sophisticated but down-to-earth.

Along with appealing to my target audience, I made sure to keep my film's branding consistent. I used the same fonts, graphics, and colors throughout my social media, postcard, and short film. In all three components, I used a typewriter font to ensure continuity. I also consistently used orange and red as my accent colors due to their prominent appearance in the short film. These two elements were most helpful in my goal of establishing the creativity and melancholy of my overall brand.

My accent color choice stemmed from the dramatic transitions from the bright and fun moments to the lonely, dark moments in my film. The images taken from these instances were used in both my postcard and the social media page to further my brand goal and brand feel. These components featured pictures of the disheveled party as a way to grab consumer attention and interest; however, I wish I had grabbed a wider variety of still shots taken from throughout my film. I used mainly the red-lit disheveled party images but had very few photos of the party in full color, the card game (both in full color and just red), the bedroom scene with the letter, and the middle school. If I had more images from these scenes, my content would be less similar to one another and would have provided a more fleshed-out brand. While this choice of primarily using party scene photos could be considered a way to avoid spoilers for the rest of the film, I think it instead took away from accurately conveying the feeling that drove me to create my film in the first place. In this aspect of my product--planning and social media--my branding felt underdeveloped. I wish I had spent more time preparing for this component of the project, since there are so many more opportunities content-wise that I believe I missed out on.

The progress I’ve made throughout working on this project has been tremendous. I have gained knowledge about the production and planning process that I would never have anticipated learning. Not to mention the confidence I’ve gained in myself, my creativity, and my work. Though there are definitely things I would change in all three components if I had more time, I’m incredibly proud of what I’ve created and the growth I’ve made through the duration of this project.

✩reflecting on my past

As I add my finishing touches to 'how fast the evening passes,' I have a few outgoing thoughts.

I'm incredibly glad that the people I chose to work with were all incredibly professional and understanding when the guidance I gave them might not have been the clearest. They were able to work effectively with one another to convey a realistic and believable friendship between themselves, thanks to them all being friends already. I was so lucky that they were so understanding and comfortable with the filming process that they rarely, if ever, broke character or the fourth wall. Plus, they made filming so much fun and so painless for me.

I'm also super thankful I made the effort to film early, even if it made me rush research and planning a bit. With the number of extracurriculars and the timing of this project, I had so many other things happening in my life that I barely had a moment to breathe. If I hadn't filmed ahead of time, I would've had to film during tech week of my show, or another inconvenient and more hectic time. Plus, filming early ensured I had ample time to edit and clean up my film to gather extra shots and do extra research as needed with less stress in the final week. Though I completely finished editing this week, I'm very thankful I had the wiggle room to edit at a stress-free pace that worked with my schedule rather than against it. This was a very good move on my part.

I do wish I spend more time planning my social media page. I feel like the content I gathered (I'm not referring to the Tiktoks I made, those were bangers and an excellent move on my part) for posts was minimal, and in my opinion, didn't help establish the brand as much as I would've hoped. The announcement posts didn't feel cohesive, and that might be because of the color scheme, fonts, or overall design of the posts. Either way, I don't feel super confident in them. I also wish I had the time to edit and put in the effort to make a "making of" video because I took a lot of BTS footage and don't seem to have a place to put it. I have only included one BTS video as of right now, and I definitely need some more, or else that will appear strange. This aspect totally needed more preparation, though I am relatively satisfied with my (almost) end result.

One last thing, I noticed that I need to work on my confidence. While this is just a general fact about me, it is easier to break down a tall task like gaining confidence into smaller portions, such as gaining confidence in my artistic choices. Though there are definitely some choices I made in my film that isn't perfect, My concept was never bad. I struggled, even when filming, to come to terms with the idea that my film is good and that I'm a good director with good ideas. I know using the word 'good' over and over is redundant, but man do I need to get this through my skull. My lack of self-confidence prevented me from making a lot of progress in the production of my film because I was nervous to commit to a concept I wasn't in love with and was afraid would lead to a terrible final product. However, with every new person with whom I shared my idea, they helped me understand that my idea doesn't suck and the choices I made were valid. I showed Jake and my film-loving Uncle a rough draft of the film and both of them had nothing but kind words for me, even when I asked them to give me specific things they thought needed to be fixed. From last year to this year, my confidence in myself and my work has stayed very minimal, but in watching my final cut, I can say with confidence that I'm really proud of myself and happy with the outcome, even if it's not the most earth-shattering piece ever created.

That pretty much covers my main feelings towards this project. Just like last year, I'm stoked to see a concept of mine being depicted on screen, whether the work came from me or not.

See you soon!

✩linktree + writing

Two things for today.

First off, I was reminded of the most brilliant idea.

Many accounts, like the one for my school's drama account, has this thing called a linktree in their social media page's bio. This is fantastic. This means that I can add all the different links my film has to one master location. I currently have a lot of places my film resides, Tiktok, Instagram, YouTube (soon), and my blog (hey), I figured this would be super helpful for me!

If this was a short film I was actually looking to distribute, I would have paid for the extra perks linktree offers, but since I'm not, I stuck with the free plan which severely limited my design options. No worries, I was still able to make it work with some help from a list of hex codes to make sure I picked the right colors that matched the vibe of the film and looked good together. I would've also made a separate google account for the film so the URL wasn't under my name but oh well, what can you do. Check out my linktree here!

With all these links and my linktree added to my Instagram and TikTok bios, I have one more thing to tackle, the Critical Reflection.

I took some notes on the requirements of each question and things I could use to answer them.

That's all I've got for today, super excited to start working on my CR (me when I lie).

✩more instagram stuff

Hi gang welcome back :D

Today I want to go over some of the choices I've made for my Instagram page! I've posted all the Tiktoks I've made, and plan on making more using the footage I've already gathered.

I did make one from my director's pov because it fits perfectly with a Tiktok audio about something happening twice and it being weird (see here) because twice one of my actors mentioned how her ex had mommy issues and I thought it was very funny and down to earth, something my audience would relate to.

Speaking of which, I would like to clarify that my target audience is mainly females, ages 14-26, who are afraid of change and/or latch onto their childhood. This is evident in the marketing strategies I've employed, like using lowercase typing and Tiktoks, my cast of feminine presenting people, and the nostalgic events in the film, like the birthday party, card game, and middle school.

I've also made a series of Instagram stories with stills I've collected and different songs that matched the vibe of my film. In order to ensure these were always available to consumers, I compiled them in a highlight on my page cleverly labeled "songs." Here are some examples of posts I made!

I'm also working on making an announcement post for a YouTube live stream event, and for my film showing at the Florida Film Festival, which I'll post to my Instagram page. The live stream event will be in June for the release of the film, and the Florida Film Festival will serve as almost a preview for the film before it's released to the public.

Other than these posts I've made, I'm sort of struggling with what else I can add to my social media page. Though I know that story posts count toward social media postings, I can't help but feel like I could be doing more to develop my brand and promote my film. I know there's more I can do, so I'm racking my brain and taking a look at other short films' Instagram pages to get an idea.

I did get a spark of inspiration from this artist who I've followed for a long time. They're in the process of releasing a short film and have a social media page for it (see here) and I really like how they made individual posts about the characters (and the crew!). Since I have photos of each of the actors, I think this is definitely something I can play around with. Though the film is animation, I believe you can get inspiration anywhere.

See you soon!

✩updates on editing!

I've got a few updates on editing!

First off, I've finished my first draft of editing! Very excited about this development. I did have to ask Isa to come over and reshoot the scene of them putting up the title banner because it was dark outside when I filmed that scene last time and I wanted the banners to remain on screen longer so viewers knew that that is the title of the film. Luckily, this scene was quickly reshot so I could continue editing.

Some of the scenes still felt off, mainly the entrance scene with my extras, Neena, Gabi, and Nat. Something about the pacing and my shot choices just wasn't flowing properly. Using a technique my Uncle taught me, I brought the whole scene to a separate timeline (listen, the small editing tools fascinate me, I feel so professional using them) to try out some alternate versions of the sequence and balance the audio. After some trial and error, I have a product I'm happy with! Unless I rewatch it and hate it, but oh well, that's the creative process.

I am beginning to go back through and fine-tooth comb my work; this includes audio balancing, cleaning up cuts, and adding some transitions. My film is already just past the 5-minute mark, so I have no need to worry about timing, especially since I still need to include my credits.

I also need to add my music. I still plan on including Claire de Lune in the scene at the middle school, and I'm considering having Moonsetter begin around the entrance scene or party setup scene. I'm still debating whether to have another song for the bedroom scene. I'm not sure if having another song will be too sudden of a switch, and I'd need to find a song that matches both the vibe and message of the film (a tall task). I am up for the challenge though!

I must say, I'm very proud of my planning skills. Often times it's so easy to wait until a few weeks before the due date to start filming, but I'm glad I filmed so far in advance to make sure I had plenty of time to be indecisive over my editing choices.

That's been my progress so far! Right now, not a whole lot to report, more soon!

✩graphic design is my passion

Hi team welcome back :P

I'm pretty proud of myself, in the on the gram (electric boogaloo) post, I talked about how I was unsure how to present posts that were just text, namely, my date announcement post.

Thankfully, two things happened that significantly helped my process.

First, in a chat with all my actors, I updated them on the process of the film and shared my social media account with them, that way communication would be easier and everyone would be on the same page. Not to mention, I could easily send all of them the finished film at once.

When I did this, Isa was reminded to send me pictures she took of the party scene while on set. I really liked them, and they were especially helpful since I needed more photos of the set to use for social media content and the making of the postcard.

With these new images in my arsenal, all that was left to do was make the content I knew I needed to make: the release date and the postcard.

Up until now, I've almost forgotten the postcard aspect of the project. I had taken some photos I could use for the cover featuring the banners (since the title is not digitally created) that could work, but I didn't have any clue what a postcard needed. I checked out a few past successful short film blogs to get an idea of what my postcard needed to include.

  1. Valedictorian postcard
  2. What Goes Around Comes Around postcard
  3. growing pains postcard
  4. afloat postcard

I noticed how many of the postcards included graphics from short films, and many had links to the film's social media accounts. Also, I loved how "afloat" included the tagline "an exploration of loss" on the front, which reminded me of the description I used on both my social media accounts and the quote Brett told me when I confided in him.

So, when creating the designs, I went to Canva to help me easily create both designs. Canva is easy to understand and use, plus has access to extra graphics to spruce up the posts. And so, the designing began. This is what my finished postcard and announcement post looks like:

(announcement post! I tried to include the title but it wasn't working out, plus the post is on the Instagram account so it'll make sense what it is that's coming to YouTube)

(front)

(back)

It's pretty simple, but I'm not sure what else to add. For now, I'm leaving it as is, if I change anything you'll be the first to know :).

Before I go, I've got a quick editing update!

I'm currently on the bedroom scene! This means I'm almost done with the first pass of my editing process! Woohoo! Once I finish, I'll share it with my different contacts (Brett, my Uncle, my parents, Jake) to get some feedback! I do have to reshoot one scene which I'll be able to quickly reshoot hopefully either today or tomorrow with Isa.

Really like my progress so far! Next step, starting my critical reflection (yay 1000 word essay. /s). See you soon beloved blog <3

✩yup editing

Hi blog!

Not a whole lot to say today, Just wanted to let you know that I have started my editing! Very exciting stuff. I'm using not only what the YouTube videos I discussed in this post said about Premiere Pro, but the advice of my Uncle! He's used Premiere Pro in the past and was able to directly show me different functions and shortcuts of Premiere, which was amazing. He lives in New York so I don't see him super often, so it worked out perfectly that he came down to visit right as I began editing.

His advice has significantly improved my editing process, since he was able to directly answer my questions on audio balancing, while also sharing his strategies when editing on the program. He showed me a strategy of creating a separate sequence where I could test out parts of my footage, even edit full scenes, without distracting from the main timeline. I've already used this strategy in testing out the best way for my transition between the happy party and the sad party was going to look and it helped tremendously. Major shoutout to my Uncle.

One thing is for sure, even though I know how the program works, it does not make editing any easier less daunting. And yet, she persisted.

With that, I should get back to editing!

✩on the gram (electric boogaloo)

Social media page update!

Here’s what my Instagram page looks like so far, I’ve just started posting & plan on posting at least one image a day. Though I first thought stories would be used to document my actual filming process as it's happening, I've already finished filming, so I can't exactly achieve this. Although, I have another idea.

One of my friends sometimes posts Instagram stories of photos he's taken and includes a song with little gifs around the song that matches the vibe of the song and the photo. They're always super artsy and cute, and one of the ideas I had for a post was a poll on which song made the viewer feel the most nostalgic. This was going to ideally increase interaction with my consumers, but I think taking inspiration from my friend not only is visually engaging, but it also helps me easily create content while promoting the vibe of my film. This is especially helpful since there are a lot of songs I have that match the vibe of the film (see the list at the bottom of this post and the playlist I mentioned at the bottom of this post) so I'll never be short on songs. Plus I already checked, and Instagram has both Clair de Lune and Moonsetter in its music story addition so I'm in the clear! Very excited about this idea.

Along with my reels and stories, I have photos of each of the girls and the stuffed animals that replace them that I can use to introduce my cast. I also have some photos of the party in both the happy and sad lighting. Also in the sad lighting, I have some title shots. However, these title shots are not my favorite, so I might need to reshoot them (which means set up the party all over again :/ ). They could work for postcards, though I'll have to look into that option more. Either way, it would be beneficial to get some more photos of my set.

(so I totally take back what I said, this one kinda rocks, I love it)

I've also followed many of my classmate's short film social media accounts since all of us are in the same boat as amateur film producers to emulate how if my short film was one I was looking to distribute to the public, I would follow and interact wish short films in a similar position as my film.

One last variation of posts I plan on adding is "behind the scenes" posts. I took plenty of pictures and videos of my cast having fun and breaking character during the shooting process which I'm excited to include. I don't think I'll make a long "the making of" video using this footage, if I do, I'll probably still post the individual clips as posts (at least, the funniest ones) for people who don't want to watch a long video of BTS and to establish a "down to earth" feel with my consumers.

One challenge I'll have to overcome is how I plan on making posts that are text, such as a release date announcement. Since I'm not using a font for my title, just the banner, this means that any text I want to include will be completely new. I do have the text used on the white card that I can use, it's some style of typewriter font that matches the aesthetic of the film well. Since it is the only other font seen in my short film (sans the Tequesta Trace Middle School font) I think a typewriter font will work very well to showcase a release date, along with other still text, in my Instagram posts.

I have a few other ideas I can use, including something with the sunset and something similar to this one I found from the Instagram account called "pleaseholdshortfilm".

See you later blog :)

✩learning the ropes

So as I've said before, I have no idea how to use Adobe Premiere.

I plan on using it to edit my film because theres only so much I can do with iMovie, and classmates have reccomended it as a better way to balance audio (since my audio mixing abilities are mid at best). As a result, I've got to learn how to use Premiere Pro, and soon. I have to start editing ASAP, and I can't start editing without knowing how to use the program I'm working on.

Normally I'd use trial and error to find out the ins and outs of the software, but Premiere has a reputation of being challenging to understand, so I figured it was a smart idea to prepare myself.

First course of action was to watch this video as a basis for what I needed to know.

Honestly theres not much else to say about learning about Premiere, this video seems to tell me everything I need to know. If theres anything I realize while editing that I might need, I can always do a quick google search.

Anyways, we ball, I'll start editing and bulking up my social media next week!

✩back on my research grind

With all my footage acquired, time to start the editing process.

I made a reminder for myself in this post to look up how to make footage look nostalgic, so that's what I did.

Things that I associate with nostalgia in terms of filming are light, somewhat desaturated colors, grainy filters, and rougher edges. We'll see if my research lines up with my vision.

I found this website that details how to achieve a vintage look:

  • use vintage lenses
    • I already recorded everything so it is too late for that
    • did mention how vintage cameras use "chromatic aberration"
      • this is defined as when a lens cannot focus all the colors into one point
    • this effect is pretty nostalgic now that I'm looking at it, if I could figure out how to make this effect in Premiere, that would be awesome!
  • lower sharpness
    • mentions to turn down sharpness before filming (too late for that) or add a blur to the final edit (something I can do)
  • grainy film overlay
  • decrease contrast and saturation
  • bring up black levels from black to dark grey
  • bring down white levels to a light grey
  • warm-up highlights (too much will give a western look)

I also found a video about how to create a retro look using Premiere Pro which will definitely help me out. The person in the video mentions that 24fps is the rate that films normally take. Not sure if that's something I have to change before or after filming, I assume before. Since my film cuts from nostalgia to loneliness, I don't think it's smart to change the fps for one part but not the other. I think I'll stick to playing with filters and effects.

The video does assume that Premiere Pro has certain effects that the person in the video made, so I'm unsure whether those are add ons I'll have to buy/download to get the effect he is describing, but I don't necessarily want to do that. However, if I must, I must.

He also adds dust that's typically seen in films. I like this a lot, though it could end up distracting, it's so cool and a staple of older films that I think it would be worth it.

The video does describe how to install the things he was describing in the video and it doesn't seem to be a lot? I'm hoping my computer won't hate me if I download it. I'll do a bit more research to see if I can add these things into Premiere myself or if its easiest to use what the video showed. I think the fact that someone had to make a downloadable folder of effects gives me my answer, though it doesn't hurt to do some more research.

I also found this short video that reiterates a lot of what I found before, and includes things I can download and alternatives if I can't. This video was very helpful :)

With that, I feel armed with the tools of nostalgia BD

✩social media (again)

Hey team :)

I've been working on some social media stuff recently!

I've made an Instagram account (my main source of promotion for the film) and have been working on making some content for this account!

The first thing I did was choose a profile picture for the account. The one I used on my TikTok account was just a temporary one with the right vibe until I took one from my set that was sufficient in creating the vibe and message I wanted. As of right now, I'm using this one. If I change my mind, I'll be sure to update the blog.

I also worked on a few TikToks to trends I listed here, plus a few others! That way, I can post them as Instagram Reels so that they reach more people. Even if someone isn't interested in watching a short film, it still gives them something interesting/entertaining to watch.

I plan on dispersing them between still images and other content (BTS, sneak peeks) for variety.

Heres what the TikToks look like!

I really like the last one, not only is it like a teaser, but it makes me think I could use Clair de Lune throughout my entire short film. I think this would be super cool to have it play throughout, and end with it swelling at the middle school. I’ll definitely try this out when I start editing!

That's it for now :P

✩filming recap!!

Filming on Sunday was fantastic! Lets recap!

I asked 3 of my friends (Natalia, Gabi, and Neena; all theatre kids and friends with each other) to join Isa and me. This was an awesome decision because when it came time to film the happy birthday and card game scenes, I could let my cast interact naturally while I moved around and filmed. Not to mention, it was a blast to spend time with them. They were all very professional and rarely broke character or looked at the camera.

I was also able to grab a few extra shots, like the girls all entering the MC's house before their party with gifts. I tried to have one of them bring in the white card with the "Were so incredibly proud of you" message but I didn't think it would make sense for a friend to bring the MC that card. My plan is to either include a brief scene of the MC receiving the card from a parent, or not filming context for the card at all. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the latter option, but we will see once I start editing.

I also grabbed some still shots of each cast member laughing to use for social media, and some other stills of the party decor and title to use for my postcard. I also made sure to grab some behind-the-scenes shots too; not sure yet what I'll do with those but the possibilities are endless.

With that, here are some examples I got!

✩back 2 my roots

Now that it's filming day, I know that I have to test out the footage I already have so I know what shots I have to reshoot.

Thanks to my wonderful teacher, I have access to Adobe Premiere! I know it's "the best" video editing software because of all its features, but I don't have the time or footage to learn premiere. So I'm making the executive decision to make a test run of my short film on iMovie my beloved. I've gotten myself very well acquainted with the program over the past two years, making me pretty confident in my abilities to crank out a quick video for experimental reasons.

I recorded a few quick videos about some things I noticed while reviewing my footage!

I would insert the mock-up video but I don't want to export it,, sorry gang! You'll just have to wait until I'm done :)

I'll update you guys on how filming day goes! I'll also make sure to grab some stills of the girls to use for social media, videos for TikTok/Instagram, and ample footage :D

See you on the other side!

(If you were wondering, my show went wonderfully :D we killed it and I'm so sad it's over)

Instagram, beloved.

As this week is crazy, I don't have a whole lot to share; although, we had a lesson on the social media aspect of our project which I have some notes from.

I'm gonna paste them here because I came up with some ideas of how I could adapt the notes given to my film

Not too sure how much I should elaborate on those ideas, but it's comforting to know that the page is only theoretical rather than one that should be presented as a "real" project (if that makes sense lol).

I do know that if the accounts have to be +20 posts, I have to get on that ASAP. This Sunday, I definitely got to grab some stills of my actors and some behind-the-scenes footage that I can post! I also have to make an Instagram account since that will be my primary social media page.

That's all for today!

✩i like music

Hi guys!

While I was filming some shots, I was also thinking of what songs I would be playing in the background.

During the scene of the MC in their bedroom, I was reminded of this audio I saw on Tiktok featuring "Changes" by David Bowie. Not only does this song specifically address change, but I really like the vintage, homey feel it gives off. I tested out this audio with the scene via Tiktok (it's a quick and easy way to test edit) and I like it! My only concern is if the song is too upbeat. I love the vintage feel from the record player but I don't know if it would match the tone of the film or if record players let you slow down tracks in order to match the song with the vibe. Here's what it looks like, this is not a final product by any means.

I also had the final shot I wanted to add a song to. Taking inspiration from "Suburbia" and its still cameras, dramatic orchestral music, and no dialogue, I've pretty much settled on "Clair de Lune" as the song for this final scene. Made another quick TikTok edit of what that might look like, because I think this one moment of the song really matched up with the footage.

That's all I have for today! Sorry for the short post, because it's show week my posts might be less meaty than usual. Apologies in advance </3.

✩things never go as planned

Just finished filming! I have some updates.

Filming with Isa went amazing! She was so fun and easy to work with, plus incredibly understanding when filming ran longer than anticipated. Which it did, but that's okay! At least I know for next time that filming one scene will likely take longer than an hour. And there will be a next time; because I asked people on Sunday if they could help me, I was unable to get 3 friends to help me out. Luckily, the people I did ask, and Isa, said they were available next Sunday, March 12th. This means that this week, I’ll start editing to check if any shots need to be reshot along with the entire card game scene and happy party scenes.

I was able to get the end scene at the middle school (without anyone asking me what I was doing at a middle school at 8pm on a Sunday, a real concern I had), the party set up, the bedroom scene, and the sad party scenes. Substantial progress!

(My Tiktok page as of now, I haven't posted any of my drafts yet and the bio and profile picture might change, but this is what it looks like as of right now. I'm also working on my Instagram page!)

(The famous party cabinet!!)

(Me and my brother deciding what color to spray paint the banner)

(One banner all laid out!)

(Isa and the back of the birthday banners LOL)

(Fun little BTS video I took :P)

That's the update for today! Time to start editing (when I get a free moment, today is show week!!)

Bye gang!

✩the long awaited storyboard +extras

I've been meaning to make this for like two weeks and I got it done the day before filming lets go.

Hey at least I made it, remember when I was preparing to go into filming blind? Scary times, why did I think that was a good idea.

REMINDER: I gotta research how films make footage feel nostalgic!

Without further ado, here's my storyboard!

I do have to change the last shot, I was able to stop by Tequesta Trace (my old middle school, the place where I want to film my last scene) and saw that the marquee they have has changed to digital :(
As smart of a decision that it, it means that the lighting will be weird since that scene will be filmed at night. However, there are some alternative options.

(This one is cool and has the name of the school, though doesn't have "middle school" anywhere which might be confusing. Looks nice though, has a bench for the MC to sit on)

(Ok this one, is kinda perfect. Looks barren and empty(adds to the lonely feel), says middle school, and has a nice curb for MC to sit on, very easy for a car to roll up to and stop in front of)

Very excited about this scene! I've also picked up Christian's sunset lamp, shared with Isa what her costume should be (warm tones, comfy pants), and am working on getting my other actors.

I also made a quick list of all the places I need to film just to keep my mind on track:

Still figuring out how I'm going to produce the sunset transition shot, but I've got some time to figure that out. What I do know is I don't want a time-lapse and would love to have an audio effect of a lamp turning off to pair with the sky turning to black, something like this.

I also tested out a graphic match shot since I plan to use multiple to transition from the dark, lonely moments and the bright, nostalgic ones. It's a pretty simple video but it was just to feel confident I could make it work.

With that, I'm ready to start filming!

✩title n prop planning

I don't think I said this in my last post but I think my film is going to be titled "how fast the evening passes." Not only was Brett a fan of it, but this one has always been my favorite out of all my options. "to see past the horizon" still goes hard and will be my alternate name should I change my mind. For now, that's what we're using!

Not sure if I said this in any of my other posts but I'll say it again, I would love to have a birthday banner with the name of the film on it instead of "Happy Birthday" for the birthday party scene (the first scene). I do have very little time between now and filming day so chances are I'll end up using a birthday banner font (somehow, if there isn't a digital one I'll use Adobe Illustrator to help me out or something) to digitally get the effect I want.

(Originally I wanted the sign to be like this. Although this one is the most nostalgic to me, it's also the hardest option sadly).

(This one is also a good option but feels like the most time-consuming, especially considering how many letters I'd have to cut out if my title was "how fast the evening passes")

(This one is the most practical option because I'd just have to use a banner I already have and write the name on the back of it! Easy money)

We also have a lot of birthday decorations already, like streamers, to use for misc-en-scene! I am nervous about filming that though, I've been so worried about my show (which is next week!!) and having to make a storyboard that I haven't gotten the sunset lamp to borrow, nor have I gotten any extras for the card game scene or the party table scene. Christian said I could get the sunset lamp tomorrow, and I have some theatre friends who live around the corner from me, are friends with Isa, and normally have free schedules that I could easily ask to be extras, which just means I have to ask them!

I have a bit of time today that I can get that done, not to mention I can chat with my brother because he came home today! Very excited (and nervous) to get his opinion on my short film, it'll definitely help to have his input and creative vision.

Some other prop work I've done is decide what stuffed animals I'm going to use for the card game. I am a hoarder of stuffed animals so I had to choose between them, but I decided on three that looked the oldest.

I also was reminded of a card I got as part of a gift from my mom, and though the sentiment is very sweet, I couldn't help but feel off-put by the card, which made me want to find a way to include it in the film.

(I'm going to remove my name from the card, not sure whether to use white-out or censor it yet)

Tomorrow I promise will be the long-awaited storyboard! Stay calm I know it's exciting :)

See you soon!

✩party time

Hi gang :P

This Sunday I start filming with Isa! Honestly, I'm really nervous. I haven't made my screenplay or storyboard yet, nor do I know where/what we're going to be filming. Definitely, important things I need to figure out before Sunday.

I would like to offer these points. The thought of writing a screenplay or storyboard right now is so daunting since I don't feel super confident about my idea and am incredibly overwhelmed by all my extracurriculars. Plus, I think it could be neat to see what I could come up with without any preparation. Is that a horrible idea? Yeah probably. However, I do have a general idea of what I want my film to look like and what shots I need to get, so I know I wouldn't feel completely lost.

I will try to make a storyboard before filming though because I think making this impulsive decision is a bad idea. I don't think I need a screenplay as of right now because I currently dont plan on having any dialouge (more on that in a moment) but who know. Oh well, time will tell what I decide, I'll keep you posted.

Also,

I spoke to Brett! Finally!

It was challenging to articulate my scrambled idea to him since I have no idea how to even begin describing my concept, but I shared with him the feeling I'm basing my short film off on and my PSO (see this post) and he caught my drift and helped me feel more confident that I could actually make this! Massive stress reliever. He really likes my concept and the Uno game scene that would switch from bright with people to dark with stuffed animals, and the potential diary scene. When I told him about the birthday party setup scene, he said that the scene could transition to the table all messed up with candy scattered around the table as if the guests created the mess. Not sure if I would have extras in the scene yet, though I think it would make sense, that just means I'd have to recruit friends to help me out and ensure I don't get their faces in the film. I have plenty of actor friends (and friends in general!) I can ask to help me out so getting extras shouldn't be a problem.

Not sure how much sense that made when I typed it out, but I know what I mean and that's what matters most. However, for reference, the scene would start something like this:

And transition to this:

Ouch </3.

Very swag idea though! I think I will definitely implement it in my short film. Looks like I might have to take a trip to Party City, or my party cabinet in my house to get those props!

Brett also showed me a poem he wrote that basically dealt with this emotion and he said this:

"In order for something new to begin, something else must end."

Ouch. I really like this phrase and I feel like it masterfully captures the feeling I want to convey. I would love to add it into my short film somehow (with credit and permission of course) though I'm not sure how. I've been tossing around whether or not I want to have a voice over but I still don't know. On one hand, it would really help to move the plot along and convey the feeling I want to convey, especially since I don't think I'll have any other dialouge. On the other hand, I'd need to incorporate it in a way that makes sense (I'm thinking either diary entry or conversation with a stuffed animal) and I'd need to write about the feeling without making it cringe. Not sure what I'm feeling yet but I think I'll decide after filming.

Omg. Also.

Remember back in this post where I talk about a fanfiction that inspired idea 2 for my short film? Well, I made a playlist for it back in the beginning of October and I was listening to it today and the song "Clair de Lune" came on. This song is very similar to Moonsetter in that its a soft piano song that makes me feel so emotional and I thought that this oculd be a perfect song to add in my short film along with another song (still a big fan of this version of Moonsetter, especially when you slow it down .75).

Anyways, made a lot of progress today! Feeling optimistic for the first time in a hot moment! Lets keep this feeling!!
